The UTMB World Series qualifier system turns every race into stones. More stones = more lottery entries for the most iconic mountain race on the planet. Here we explain the system and calculate how many you have.
UTMB calculates each race's km-effort using the formula km + D+/100. That number determines how many stones you earn.
| Running Stones | km-effort |
|---|---|
| 0 stones | < 25 km-effort |
| 1 stone | 25–59 km-effort |
| 2 stones | 60–99 km-effort |
| 3 stones | 100–149 km-effort |
| 4 stones | ≥ 150 km-effort |
Major races (including UTMB Mont-Blanc itself) award double stones. Stones accumulate over 24 months.
Any official UTMB World Series race earns stones based on its km-effort.
They're added automatically to your UTMB profile. They expire 24 months after your race.
Each stone = 1 extra lottery entry. Just 1 stone unlocks access to the UTMB, CCC, OCC and TDS draws.
These are the NTL calendar races with official UTMB World Series Event status. Stones are credited automatically to your UTMB profile after the event.

How many stones do I need to enter UTMB Mont-Blanc?
You only need 1 stone to be eligible for the UTMB, CCC, OCC and TDS lotteries. The MCC (40K) has had no stone requirement since 2026. More stones don't guarantee a spot, but they multiply your lottery entries.
How long are stones valid?
Running Stones are valid for 24 months from the date you finish the race. After that they expire and are deducted from your total.
Does Chihuahua by UTMB give double stones as a Major?
No. Chihuahua and Puerto Vallarta are UTMB World Series Events, not Majors. The Majors that double stones are: UTMB Mont-Blanc, Western States 100 and Hardrock 100. NTL races award standard stones based on km-effort.
Do I need a UTMB index in addition to stones?
For UTMB 100M, TDS and CCC, yes — you need a minimum UTMB index calculated from your finish times at recognized ultras. OCC and MCC do not require an index.
Can I use Chihuahua 2026 stones for the 2027 lottery?
Yes, as long as they haven't expired (24 months). If you finish Chihuahua in October 2026, your stones are valid for the UTMB 2027 and 2028 lotteries.
